5. Profile Previews From Public GitHub Data

CodeTree can show a preview of what a profile for a GitHub account would look like, before that person has an account with us. This section describes exactly what happens, because it involves people who have not signed up.

• A preview only exists when someone asks for it. It is generated when a visitor enters a username on our home page or opens a preview link. We do not generate previews in bulk, and we never contact anyone about one. If you have not signed up with us, we will not email you.
• What we read. Only what GitHub publishes to anyone: the public profile name, bio, avatar, website, and public repositories with their languages. We never read private repositories or email addresses for this.
• What we keep. Nothing is written to our database. The generated preview is held in a temporary cache for a few hours so a shared link does not re-query GitHub on every view, and then it is discarded. No account is created for you unless you sign in yourself.
• Who can publish it. Only the owner of that GitHub account, proven by signing in with GitHub. Nobody else can turn a preview into a live page.
• Search engines. Preview pages are served with a noindex instruction and are excluded in our robots.txt.
• How to object. Every preview page carries a link to remove it. We then store only the GitHub username, so we know never to build that page again, and we hold nothing else about the account. You can also email us at dev@code-tree.de.

We rely on legitimate interests for this processing, and previews are limited to already-public information for that reason.

6. Data Protection Rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you have certain rights regarding your personal information. These include the right to request access, correction, deletion, or restriction of your personal information, and the right to data portability. If you wish to exercise any of these rights, please contact us.

7. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date.
